Whatever your child's shortcommings are at this age, it is your fault. Once you admit that, cry and get angry about it, it is time to move forward, not backwards. If you want your child to be mediocre and grow up to work as a bank teller or a secretary, then go ahead and listen to the public school. If you want more for your child, you have to do the work. Do you think Tiger Woods would be half as good today if his father had not worked with him since birth?

There are thousands of books, computer programs, workbooks, even toys you can buy to help your child get ready for Kindergarten. It is up to you to find what methods are right for you and your child and then work with your child everyday for at least two to three hours. That includes Saturday and Sundays after church when football is on.

As for how common this is, it is called red-shirting, and they have been doing it in college sports for quite some time. Lately, it is the wanna-be upper middle class parents who are doing it in the public schools becuause they are too selfish or lazy to give their child any real advantages. We do not allow this to go on in our school, and many other private schools are putting their foot down on it as well. In our school it would be noted as "child works a year below grade level" and he would not be asked back the next term.
