oh boy, that is hard! According to my doc the baby wakes up because they are having a hard time getting themselves back to sleep. Everyone goes through different sleep cycles. Once they get to that light phase they sometimes wake up and can't get back to sleep. If they're used to the routine of getting a bottle at night, they'll expect it to help them fall back asleep. I was told to let him cry and that it would take about one week before he finally learns how to get himself back to sleep. I just couldn't do it. I tried for two nights and he screamed like he was being tortured for over an hour. Me and DH went in and out of the room to let him know we were there, but he went nuts as soon as we left the room. We live in an apartment and it's just too late to have a baby screaming in the middle of the night. So we've just decided to get up and give him the damn cup (he's through with the bottle now).
