what is spanking exactly???

I am a 14 yr old girl and i have recently moved in with my aunt and 2 cousins (16 and 11) because of problems at home. A couple of days ago i went out and came back half an hour later than i sed i would. My aunt was mad and said that normally she would spank me but as i hadn't known that then she would let me off this once, and warned me that next time i broke the rules, i would be spanked.

The problem is, i'm not exactly sure what spanking is. I asked my older cousin but she just laughed and sed that i'll find out soon enough.

So my questions are...
1. What exactly is spanking?
2. If any1 out there has been spanked, what happens/is it bad?
3. Should i try and avoid it and how?
