I know this may sound strange, but it worked for my son who started hitting me at about 14 months old. I sort of used our animals to show him how to treat people;you could probably apply the same thing to a favorite stuffed animal/toy if you don't have live animals. Since he was constantly hearing "BE NICE" ever time he touched one of the animals, I started to say that when he'd hit me. I just applied the same thing to my face-since that is what he preferred hitting! I started taking his hand and rubbing it across my face (gently) saying "show me how to be nice"; when he would be "nice", I made sure to show him that it was really good by clapping or saying something in a cheerful voice. (I also made sure to let his daycare provider know that I wanted her to continue w/the same.) Now, at 18 months, when I hold him....he rubs his little hand gently across my face without me even telling him! It's the sweetest thing!
