SUBJECT: A different problem, he wont go alone
I had a very difficult job toilet training my son when he was little, he was 6 when I eventually got him to sit on the toilet and go properly. At the time this was on a condition that I stayed in the bathroom with him while he used it, this seemed a lesser issue than him not using it at all and could be worked on as a next stage.

This has dragged on, he is now 11 and I still have to be in the bathroom with him while he uses the toilet. I’m not sure if this is an insecurity problem or he just refuses to let old habits go. There have been many times when I have tried leaving the door open and standing the other side of it as a way of gently breaking him away from the habit, but each time he has got off the toilet and pulled his trousers up, so this have just got put off till another day.

My friend is aware of it and she believes he is getting to the age where he will want his privacy and the problem will solve itself. My son is aware that my friend knows, he accepts that but is adamant that nobody else knows. I find the main difficulty is getting him to talk about it, if he did then maybe I could get somewhere but he just blocks any conversation about this out.
