Help, new mom. Since my son began daycare he is very aggressive and defiant.

I have no ideas. Please help me. Since my 17 month old began daycare he has become angry, cries a lot and does not listen. What should I do. I have tried spanking, it does not work. I have tried being firm (control) does not work. He just seems like a different boy. He seems like he is letting out frustration. Who is at fault? The day care or my husband and I? Help me.
