I'm a teacher. I do not like it any more than you do. Let me try to explain a little about why this has all come about. Parents like you are rare these days. Most parents think that learning starts and ends in the school. Many times the only discipline or adult interaction these children get is at school. I have a ten year old at our school who gets himself on the bus in the morning, then stays by himself until 8:00 at night until his mother gets home. I have never heard mention of a father. That is no kind of life for a child. The foster care system is overflowing to the point that this child is not a priority to them. Sad, really. We also have a program in our school called after school care. The parents of these kids don't pick them up until after 5:00. A lot of times, teachers give so much homework becuase it is easier to control these kids, most of them problem children or academically disadvantaged, during the hours they remain at school.

Also, last year on our playground, a 7 year old held a knife to another child. SCARY!

Also, if you go over to the Toddlers Section of this site, you will see that there are quite a few moms who are obsessed with their child being a genius and know little to nothing about child development, giftedness, psychology, or education. They tie their own success into how much the child knows, what the child studies, what grades the child gets, the child's IQ. Equally SCARY!

Some schools have what they call 'stacked' classrooms. These classes are made up of mostly "car rider" kids with at least one parent at home. The kids come in ready to learn, and are usually pretty well behaved, so there is plenty of time for fun and a lot less homework than some of the other classes.
