getting 21/2 yo off pasafire

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ween a 2 1/2 year old off the pasafire? I tried only using it at night but my daughter wants it all day long. Her ped. said to give her a baby instead as her security but she already uses that too. Someone told me to cut the tip off and each week cut off a little more until it is so small that she finds it too difficult to keep in her mouth. I cut it once and she freaked out and threw it. any other suggestions?
