My son will be 1 on November 6th and has just started doing the same thing...I do the same thing as you..I hold his hand and tell him we don't hit. I won't pat him on the butt for fear he may start doing that too. I know that at 1 yo they can not communicate well so when they are angry this is all they can do. I will never allow it but feel like with consistency it will get better. I also sometimes carry him in his room and tell him that he may stay in there if he is going to act that way...usually he calms right down and gets over it. Some people may advise distraction...and this will probably help too. If you find any creative things that work let me know...I do not want this to become a habit.
