I've also tried to let my son cry himself to sleep, and like your son he has also thrown up. I cleaned him up and I felt so terrible that I never let him cry again! I couldn't imagine letting him fall asleep in his puke.

I've read that babies will do this because they know that it gets you in the room. But I just couldn't bring myself to listen to him get that worked up. Sorry, I realize that I'm not giving you any advice, just letting you know that other babies do the same thing. I guess if you can handle the crying eventually he may get the point and just go to sleep.
