From the age of around 18 I started to experience general thinning hairloss, it was fairly sudden, college mates would comment on it and even cruel strangers would say 'you know you're balding?' Like that's really helpful to hear! I went to the doc and was referred to hospital specialists, they did all the tests and could come up with nothing, put it down to 'stress' since I was a student but I refuted this knowing that I was having the time of my life! I mentioned that my mum also had quite thin hair so the 'experts' concluded it was simply genetic. Still I had a hard time believing it, apart from hormones the only other thing to have changed in my late teens was that I'd discovered alcohol. I saw a tv programme about female hairloss and heard people say that eating healthily helped, I tried making an effort and can honestly say it improved without any medical intervention, when I was 28 I went on an actual diet which was basically healthy eating, more veg, fruit, water - cut out alcohol, most fatty and processed food and my hair got another 50% better - needless to say the diet has been an easy one to stick to even when not loosing weight and I've remained slim and 'hairy' for almost 2 years. I'm now quite pregnant and I think my hair is even thicker. I met some old college friends last week who commented, quite out of the blue, on how thick my hair was - I hadn't seen them in 10 years - so it must have been a huge difference. I'm sure it is to do with hormones - apparently alcohol and a diet more than 20% fat increase hormones such as testosterone and oestrogen or progesterone, while being pregnant raises the other of oestrogen and progesterone - I'm not sure which of these might be responsible or even something else but I'm almost certain it's all linked. BTW, the diet was Scottish Slimmers. I've heard that hairloss can be caused by your hair follicles response to testosterone. Hope this helps in some way. ;-) ps. I'm not looking forward to possibly balding again after I give birth but am prepared for the possibility :-(
