I am a teacher. Granted, I teach younger kids, but I have never heard of subrtaction 'families' and do not understand why your child has to learn subrtaction in this way. You can talk to the teacher and if you don't like what you hear ask for a change. I think by the 5th grade they should stop counting on fingers.
