You need to take some parenting classes. your discipline methods are ineffective, but you admitted that, so now all you have to do is learn and grow from here. You are doing the right thing by taking the video games away and sitting with him while he does his work. Many many parents have to do this with their children. it is called CARING-hehe.

Somewhere along the line in his development this child was neglected. You mention the father out of the picture. I wonder if this boy was put into a daycare full time at a very young age or was left with a caregiver who only gave this boy negative attention. It is going to take time for this boy to get used to being in a loveing, two parent home. Family therapy will help you all a great deal.
