I took away all movies, including Disney, that had any violence in them at all. I took away video games that had any violence.
I drew a picture of a road that divided into two, with a happy face on one and a sad face on the other. I told him that when he hurt his friends, he was chosing the sad road. People who choose the sad road have no friends, no one wants to be with them, and they play alone. I asked him if he wanted to play alone. I asked him if he wanted people to like him. I put the picture on the fridge. Every morning I asked him, are you going to chose the sad road or the happy road at school today? When he said the happy road, I said, good, I'm very proud of you. And when I picked him up if he hurt someone, I referred to it again, and said, I see you chose the sad road today, that's too bad for you. You can also buy a happy face rubber stamp and put it on his hand. Tell him to look at it when he feels angry. Also, I don't think kids come into the world knowing how to feel. So I told my son how to feel. I told him that when he hurt his friend that he should feel very sad. Anyway, this is long, but it sure worked for me. |
