My son is 16 months old. We are (somewhat) transitioning to one nap.

I agree with the previous poster in that I can tell by my son's behavior that he still needs two naps most of the time. If I do let him skip one, it is the a.m. nap, and then we only skip it if he has slept late (7 a.m. or so for him) - so he does refuse to go down at 9 - but I make sure I keep him occupied if he doesn't have the morning nap. If I try to force the issue on these days, I have found he will not nap well in the afternoon which makes him a total and complete grouch in the late afternoon and early evening.

At this point, I only let him sleep from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning when he does seem like he needs it. That amount of time seems to not interfere with the afternoon nap, which is generally 2 hours (I do not let him sleep past 3).

If your son is grouchy when he misses a nap, then he probably still needs 2. What time are his naps right now?
