Your son sounds exactly like my daughter..same age and all! I requested that she be tested this year, through the school, for a learning disability. We were in denial for 2 years before 5th grade, I guess. But after the testing we found out that my daughter does have a "processing deficit" a learning disability. She also has A.D.D. Attention Deficit Disorder. We had an I.E.P. meeting with her teacher, principal, etc....Now the teacher sends home her reading stories on tape. She also only grades the work she gets done, instead of marking wrong the problems she didn't get to. And she's on Straterra. It's a pill she takes once a day so she doesn't take it at school. It helps her focus and concentrate (for her A.D.D.) Life is SO much better for her. She does not know she has a learning disability and we made it clear to everyone involved NOT to tell her. She will be down on herself and I don't want that. I just want her to feel "normal" around her friends. She will feel different if we told her. I just told her the reason she was being tested was to see what "kind" of a learner she is. After the testing and results, I told her that they found out she is a "hearing" learner and that she learns best by hearing and using her hands. She thought that was pretty cool! As far as the pill for A.D.D., we told her the pill is for her stomach. She accepted it with no questions. You need to ask the school to test your son. Tell them you are concerned that he has a learning disability. I'm sure they'll comply. Good luck and keep in touch through the message board!
