SUBJECT: Possible Learning Disability
I have a 10 yr. old son who is in the 5th grade on a trial period. He seems to have had problems in school ever since the 3rd grade when things became more challenging. I am scared and overwhelmed sometimes by all of this because I love him very much and want him to feel good about himself and school. He has a very struggling time in math and always has, especially his timetables. He forgets alot of his homewor. It takes him awhile to comprehend what he is supposed to do. He doesn't like to talk about school and he always gets mad at me. Gives me a hard time when he has to do homework and then he has been coming home with very low grades in schoolwork and tests. Me and my husband have felt for a long time that he may have a learning problem, but now we feel we need to do something before it's too late. We will be meeting with the teacher and can anyone tell me how to get these issues across to the teacher and to demand he be tested. Also, not one of my son's teachers over the years has pointed out that he may have a learning disability and that has been frustrating. They have said he daydreams alot and he fidgets at times in his seat, but he never has gotten out of his chair. He becomes easily distracted and his motivation and attitude are not good. I feel so alone because the school makes me feel like he is doing this deliberately and yet there is no mention of a learning disability. I can use any type of suggestions or approaches because I feel as though my relationship with my son is not really good because of this.
