Is this a self-esteem problem? Does this child feel like a failure in school? Is he depressed? Did his 2nd grade teacher make him feel like a failure? It sounds like he does not feel good about himself. No one feels inspired to do something that they think they are not good at. Did his 2nd grade teacher spend a year labeling him negatively? This is my guess, anyway, from the info that you've given. I would try to boost his self-esteem, tell him he's quite smart, and he can excel in school. He has what it takes. Trying endless praising. Have you considered hiring a tutor for a short period, to sit with him while he does his homework? Someone with a soft touch and a lot of patience. Someone he does not know. I might talk with him about what the 2nd grade teacher said to him, did she make him feel bad. If she did, maybe he'd feel better to get your perspective on that. Somewhere along the line he got some negative input relating to school and he's internalized it.
