My nephew came to visit. He was showing similar problems. It all started when he had originally become constipated and forced too hard. He split his rectum and the next few times he went he felt pain.

This made him reluctant to have a BM at all and he would hold it in. Of course, that made it worse.

His mother made steamed prunes every morning and gave him them in his milk. This had the effect of loosening everyhting up and causing softer BMs and less pain.

I think you are right about the problem now being more pyschological than medical and all you can do is be patient and explain to your daughter that the laxatives or prunes will make the BM softer and it wont hurt at all.
