SUBJECT: Frustrated with 7 yr. old daughter's problems/ teacher
My 7 yr. old daughter has started her 2nd gr. school year off with problems that I have become frustrated with. First, her teacher has implemented an "assignment" book that the children list their class assignments in each morning. When an assignment is completed, it is to be checked off. Simple enough. On Friday, my daughter brought home a packet of workbook pages that were "incomplete" (only 2 out of 10 pages were done) and it was considered late and to be completed and turned in on Monday. I was aghast!
I went back through her assignment book and there was nothing written in it (her teacher checks over what they have written) to indicate that those pages were to be done as homework OR in-class work anytime in the past! This is the 2nd time that this has happened. I met with the teacher after the first incident and she didn't seemed to be too concerned with her failing grade on the assignment. She actually told me that other parents had called with similar concerns and that she was more curious as to how many parents were concerned enough to call her. ???Another concern that I am having is that this teacher does not give spelling word lists each week. She believes that "spelling rules" will help the children learn better and so the class learns a concept each week and then gets a spelling test with words that follow that "rule". Of course, the 3 other 2nd Gr. classes at the school do not follow her thinking and give their class spelling word lists to study each week. Needless to say, my daughter has gone from "A"s to "F"s on most of her spelling tests. I am frustrated in how to help her study her spelling when I do not have concrete words to help her study with! I am beginning to think that this teacher has forgotten that these are 2nd graders and that they need more exact directions to help them achieve. I have spoken to a couple of other moms with children in the same class and they feel exactly the same way. Any suggestions or comments?
