Here are the reasons that married parents work, and I'm sure there are more.
1) If you read the news, you will see that a single-income home is not enough money to simply pay the bills these days in many instances. Some married parents must have a double-income to survive. 2) Saving for your children's education so that they have to opportunity to be all that they can be. That includes not only college, but also private grammer/high school, if you consider it to be superior. 3) Having enough money so that you children can live in a safe and nice neighborhood. 4) Having enough money so that your children can live in a nice house, and have their own room. 5) Saving for retirement so that you are not a financial burden to your children. 6) Having enough money to buy the things that your children need, and the things that they desire for those special occasions. You may deny it, but there is some poor child out there who has been praying for a rocking horse, or whatever, every year for 3 years, and it will never arrive. This may seem petty to you, but it matters to a child. 6) Having enough money to send your children to summer camp, or go to Disneyland, or on a nice vacation, or even pay for all of those school sports or cheerleading. MANY of the things that kids love to do cost money.
My mother stayed home. I lived in a run down home, had used clothing, and was so embarrassed that I did not invite friends over. My mother drove me around town in a beat up old car with blue smoke puffing out the back. The neighbors used to ask why I (yes, a child) did not replace our curtains because they hung in tatters and it brought the neighborhood down. When I was 12 the neighbors asked why we did not paint out house. I never went on vacations or to summer camps, but watched my friends go. I never received the things that I desired for birthdays or Xmas. We had no money. I wore clothes from the salvation army to school. But my mother stayed home. Quite frankly, I believe that she should have gone to work, certainly by the time we were in school full time. My childhood would have been far more enjoyable and much less embarrassing if she had simply made some monetary contribution to the household. Money makes the world go round. |
