SUBJECT: Birthday Party Manners
My 4.5 year old and two younger children were invited to a 9-year old's birthday party because their father is a former co-worker with the birthday girl's mother (aka, I am not close with the mother). My children were the only children at the party under the age of 8. At the party they had prizes for games. They only had 1 game and the birthday girl gave all the prizes away to her friends but none to my children. There was no shortage of prizes (all the other children received 3-5 each). My 4 year old was sad that she was not included. I explained that we were family friends and it was the birthday girl's prerogative to share the prizes with her friends. Should I call the mother of the birthday girl to tell her how my daughter felt or just let it go? I know it can be confusing at parties (there were 10 other children there). I didn't want my daughter go in and ask for a prize, but we are also working with her to be more assertive. How else could I have handled this situation? Thank you for your comments.
