Hi Concerned Mom
I think you should be concerned. Although some children will come through writing letters backward without help some don’t. Given that you had similar problems when you were young it would probably be better if you took action. Your son is blessed because he has you. Perhaps you could talk with your parents and find out the doctor's name who diagnosed you. You could take your son there. Or if you are near a children's hospital or a teaching hospital you could take your son there to be evaluated. Many states offer free services to this end. It’s a lot of paperwork and a lot talking but worth it.

Another thing, experts are good and they can give us valuable insights into our children but no one knows your son better than you do. No one loves him more than you do. And no one will care more about his future than you. God gave children parents for a reason, to love, protect and train them. So go and make some phone calls, have your son evaluated but be wise in what advise you decide to act on.

Another funny thing about experts they tend to offer diagnosis weighted toward their discipline. Listen to all of the reports and do some research and reading of your own before you decide on a course of action.

As good as experts are it is Mom and Dad who make the difference. Work at home with him. Games and outside activities can train his eye to see and process letters correctly. Art and Sports can help. Kids tend to view these as fun and not learning. There are a lot of learning systems out there that can help your son learn to read. One I like especially is game based. It cost me a pretty penny but it was invaluable in helping my children master reading. I think it was called the phonics game. I can be a family night activity. It has video and audio elements too. But it was fun my kids enjoyed it.

I hope this is helpful.
God bless you and your family,
Always Faithful
