I have found taking things away from my children is a great way to teach a lesson. I have even thrown away some of my children’s' things to teach them a lesson. To make it fair, I would make it very clear to your son while he is breaking a rule that if he continues to do what you tell him not to, that you will have to take away ......(tell him exact what it is you will be taking away). Then if he breaks the rule again, promptly take away the item. Tell him when he will get it back (I suggest not to take it away for too long but long enough that he will miss it) and if he breaks the rule again while the item is off limits, the time frame will be extended. Explain to him that you want him to keep his things so you hope his behavior changes so that you don't have to take it away again. This way he can't "blame" you but will hopefully realize that it's his behavior that dictates what you do.

As with all disciplining techniques, don't over use this one. And remember, our kids need our guidance but they don't need to be totally controlled so choose your battles.

Take care and good luck.
