I think grounding is a huge step up from hitting and writing something intersting is a huge step up from lines...

But as an English teacher I question making writing a punishment instead of a querencia, an art, a love, a release, a pleasure, a joy...

Is there another way to communicate with your teenager where you just relate without punishing at all?

I think writing essays on school topics is just awesome if it weren't a punishment. I worry about making school work into a control or power issue.

If you insist on punishing, it seems to be the most productive form of punishment and I like it better than other punishments BUT they teach in teacher's college in British Columbia Canada not to turn your subject into a punishment.

I don't punish when I teach high school and I have mostly well behaved students. The only serious trouble maker I had was from a punitive home that was so bad I had to call CPS.
