I have gone through the same thing with my now 17 m/o. About 4 months ago, she began refusing to go to sleep on her own. I tried the mattress on the floor, pushed in the corner w/a bed rail on the other side, but I had to lie down on the mattress with her. She woke up 3-4 times during the night and every time I had to go lie down w/her to get her back to sleep. I tried gradually moving myself out of the room but she would freak out when she realized I wasn't there. And with her being on the mattress, it was impossible to make her stay there. I finally got tired of getting up so much every night and decided to go back to the crib and let her cry it out. Before I started this, I established a routine of bath, story, and kisses. The first night she cried 30 min, 15 the second and third nights and about 5 min every night since then (tonight will make our 6th night). The first night she woke up several times but I didn't go in her room until she woke up for good around 7. Since then, she has woken up only once per night but cries for about 2-3 min before gaoing back to sleep. I tried the slow way and it didn't work for us.
