Hi. Just wanted to let you know that my son was diagnosed with breath holding spells at about 9 months of age. The first time it happened, he passed out. We took him to the emergency room and they advised us that it is probably breath holding spells. His pediatrician also confirmed this. We were told that to try and prevent these episodes is to blow in his face when he gets into a deep cry. Believe it or nor this worked. He hasn't had an episode for about two years, until two days ago. He is now almost 4. He was outside playing and got hurt near his eye. He let out a short cry and then began holding his breath. He then lost conscienceness for about a minute. Since this happened outside, many neighbors were around and 911 was called. Three ambulances and two police cars were already there just as he was coming to. This was the scariest episode yet that I have experienced. We went to the hospital again and he seemed to be okay, but very drowsy. The next day we took him to his pediatrician and she now wants him to see a nuerologist and have an EEG and MRI performed, just for precautionary to rule out seizures. What I wanted to let you know is that you are not alone. This is the one of the scariest things a parent has to go through. Just to sit there and watch your child stop breathing and being helpless to it is horrible. Anyway, blowing in your child's face early on in the episode can help to prevent it. Hope all is well.
