It sounds like you are doing what you can. My 14 month old is doing this also. And I noticed that she's teething. But I think she's having nightmares, because she is really pitching a fit, howling, like she's terrified. I brought her to bed with us. That's the only thing that allows her to calm down. Then when I thought she was feeling better, I put her back into her crib. Yes, she cried a bit, but went to sleep eventually. As I recollect childhood, the only thing that helps quell nightmares is the physical presence of a parent. There's always the problem of them getting used to it, and crying to get into our room, but I know from the sound of the cry whether she needs to come in the room or not.
