SUBJECT: Night terrors, bad dreams or just one of those things?
The last two nights, my 14 month old son has been waking around 10:00 at night screaming and crying.

The first night, he would quiet down when we picked him up and rocked him but would start screaming again when we put him back in his crib. Rubbing his back seemed to work for about 15 minutes and just being in the room worked ok as well. The minute we left the room though, he would scream, hit the wall shake his crib and just basically pitch a fit. After about 4 hours, he finally crashed for the night.

Last night was a lot better, but he woke again at 10:00 screaming. When we picked him up he tried to push away and arched his back. He finally quieted down when we gave him some Benadryl and his nuk.

I was told that I had night terrors as a child, and I don't know if they are hereditary or if this is even what is happening to him, but it's very scary for all of us.

He is getting at least 3 teeth at the moment (2 upper molars and 1 lower tooth can be seen for sure). Benadryl at night has helped the runny nose and draining that he always gets when he's teething. I'm sure the first night he woke from tooth discomfort, but he has never screamed like that when he has gotten teeth before, so that doesn't seem to be the logical reason.

We just don't know what this is. He is normally a very happy little boy that is full of smiles and laughs, so it is unusual for him to act like this. He is begining to have small occasional tantrums during the day, but nothing that is out of control or very frequent. We let him work through it and then we snuggle for a bit and go on with our day.

Any suggestions on why this is happening all of a sudden, or what we can do to help him? He has been sleeping through the night and going to sleep on his own for quite a while now and is doing a wonderful job at it. We don't want to get him used to the idea that mom and dad will cave in at night, but we just don't know another way to comfort him.

I welcome any and all suggestions.
