This sounds exactly like my daughter. She just turned 3 in June. I had a second child in March, but the oldest one's tantrums didn't get really bad until recently. I have tried all of the conventional techniques to deal with tantrums like ignoring it, taking away things, etc. but it seemed to make it worse. For example, when I put her in her room alone during a tantrum, she becomes so hysterical and out of control and cannot calm herself down. I have been doing some research and my doc told me about a book Raising Your Spirited Child. This described my daughter exactly. It talks about kids who are intense, persistent, overly sensitive (ex. my daughter has a fit if the seams on her sleeves are not straight), very perceptive, and not adaptable. It gives techniques to diffuse meltdowns also. I have just finished it and hope it will help me. The author calls the tantrums "spill over tantrums" and said that these are not manipulative. She says that these kind of kids are easily overwhelmed and cannot control their emotions well and that their tantrums are caused by emotional overload. It is a good book and I am willing to try anything at this point.
