I urge all parents to take this approach. You can start when your children are as young as four. Every family needs to set aside and hour that is for reading/writing/etc. Every family member is to participate. While junior does his homework, mom could be doing a crossword, and dad could be reading a bestseller, sister could be writing to her pen pal. Children NEED to see their parents reading and writing in order to be motivated to do it themselves. This hour needs to be set aside every day, homework or no homework. If you have not been doing this throughout your child's life, it will be hard to get started, but after a few months, it will be simply a part of your routine. If dad thnks it's silly to participate, ask him if he wants his child to be somebody or somebody flipping burgers.
