Bedazzled,

check this out...Pick out a subject that your son is REALLY into and ask him to describe something or explain that thing...in short, engage him in a writing assignment about which you know he is interested! Make up a reason why you need it as though it would help YOU out about that subject. See if he still has difficulty writing and organizing his thoughts. If he still has difficulty with it, he may have sequential reasoning problems. All instruction in the early elementary school years is linear and sequential. Visual-Spacial processing is also heavily relied upon in school at this age. Children enjoy demonstrating their abilities! I found my son stopped wanting to participate only when things were either Underchallenging or Over-challenging to him. Ask an Educational Consultant in your area to test your child as soon as possible to rule out any learning disability. The earlier you determine or rule out a real problem the better. It will save your relationship with your son if all he needs are compensatory skills or he if he simply feels understimulated by the subject matter and THAT is impacting his ability to focus. Would love to know how he did with that "high interest" writing request.
