 | Zalexa, My child began to have difficulties in kindergarten as well. Pre-K was great for him (montessori) full of hands on learning and self-chosen activities. As soon as he was asked to sit still, listen to the teacher, and write (I didn't know but he actually had disgraphia), problems began. He was frustrated in school because he thought all this should be easy for him...from his perception,it seemed to be easy for all the rest of his classmates). Very advanced intellectually and verbally he became oppositional and began to avoid certain tasks because they made him feel stupid. There may be something in school in which he feels incompetant and is struggling with. These bright kids are extremely sensitive to incompetance. Speak to his teacher about ANY areas in which he is having difficulty including problems with using a sizzors, forming letters, hyper-focusing on certain tasks, staying still. The Book "the Edison Trait" or more recently known as Dreamers, Dynamos and...shoot I forgot the exact title...by Lucy Palladino. Superb Book for parents of kids who crave hands on learning & excitement & exploration...it describes 3 kinds of learning styles. It helped me understand my kid. Educators should read it so that they stop categorizing children in negative ways simply because they don't fit the "norm" and begin respecting ALL learning styles and develop ways to teach to EACH of them. Love him up. |
