How do I get my son to TELL me?

My son is 3 (will be 3 1/2 in Dec) and I have ALWAYS had to take him to the potty. He will not tell me when he has to go. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can say or do to get him to relate this to me? Plus what age is "normal" for them to be able to go into the bathroom by themselves without me begging them?
He is in preschool and I just pray everyday when I go to pick him up that he hasn't gone potty in his pants. I tell him over and over he needs to tell me, daddy, grandparents, teachers when he needs to go---but still he will just pee/poop his pants rather than to tell us.
