You won't be able to use FMLA leave and the job protections it provides.

The only thing you could do is ask for an extended unpaid leave of absence that is not covered under FMLA, but most companies don't guarantee that your job would stay open until your return. Without a legitimate medical reason, you wouldn't be able to use short or long-term disability benefits.

Do you have family or someone that you trust who can watch your child? If you do, you might want to ease back into working. After our daughter was born, my wife went back part-time for three weeks, and the transition was much easier that way. By the end of that time, she was ready to go back full-time.
