 | I have a friend whose four year old daughter started vomiting when she arrived for her weekend visit. Nothing she would eat or drink would stay down for more than ten minutes. She wasn't complaining of any other pain or discomfort but this little girl isn't the type who complains anyway. After a day and half of the vomiting, he took her to the hospital and the doctor said it was 'something that's going around' and sent them home with the order to drink more fruit juices and see if it gets worse. After the hospital visit, my friend noticed her pee had a thick discharge that looked like chicken soup. I drove over to visit armed with a few medical books to see if I could help figure out what was wrong. By the time I got there, she had managed to eat a few crackers and started perking up. We went to play in park and she did all her usual activities, although a bit slower than she usually is. By this time, the weekend visit was over so the daughter went back to Mom. Two days later, I drove over to Mom's house to check on things. Mom wasn't home but the daugher was there with a sitter. She was crying and complaining of a headache--very unusual for this girl. I stayed long enough to take her temperature (it was normal) and find out that she wasn't hurting anywhere else. When I talked to Mom that night, she said the girl was getting much better but had been complaining of lower back pain when she first got back from Dads. She also had developed an unusual reluctance to use the bathroom (she's fully potty trained). She didn't complain of any specific symptom (like burning or itching when urinating) and her mother didn't observe any reaction indicating any discomfort when her daughter was urinating. I drove down to visit Mom the next day and the daugher seemed to be fine. It's been two weeks now and the little girl seems fine. The vomiting, soupy urine, and lower back pain point to a urinary tract infection to me but there was never any fever or painful urination. Is it possible to have a UTI without burning or stinging when urinating and would a UTI just go away without any treatment? Anybody know what else she might've had if it weren't a UTI. BTW, this little girl has a twin sister who was with her the entire time, slept in the same bed, and ate the same foods but didn't exhibit any of the these symptoms. |
