When my second child was on the way, we put our oldest in his bed about a month befor. We didn't plan for the baby to sleep in the crib right away since we would have the bassinette(did I spell that right?) in our room. He was 20 months old at the time and did an excellent job. We got him a twin sized matress and a side rail and put the matress right on the floor. It makes us feel more comfortable knowing he's not too far off the ground. He was very excited to get big boy bed. Especially with twins on the way, I think it would be easier if he were used to the idea that the crib isn't his anymore. The bed is his. You'll have your hands full. Why add an extra complication? Good luck.
