IN REPLY TO: son having problems in kindergarden

I had the same concerns as you did when my son started kindergarten. He turned 5 two weeks before school started last year. His teacher had concerns that maybe he was too young and you know what...she was right. Some children are ready at age 5 and some need that extra year at home. It is better to take him out when you think he's too young rather than let him stay the whole year and find out he really wasn't ready and will have to take it again when all his other friends are in 1st grade. That was my thought anyway. I knew he wasn't ready and I cryed when I took him out of school because he made friends and he was actually pretty happy being there, except for the fact that while all the other kids were progressing he was staying at one spot. He loved to do the stuff the class did, but when it was time to do something else he would not quit what he was doing until it was finished...which I thought was good that he wanted to finish his work, but he needed to know when to stop and finish later. I know I made the right decision to wait until this year. He is much more focused and he seems more ready for school to start. I hope things get better. Maybe try talking to him about what he thinks. My son didn't want to leave because he thought it meant he would never get to see his friends, but I told him we could get their numbers and make play dates and then he wanted to come home.It is very hard not knowing what to do. And it was very hard for me to accept the fact that Skyler wasn't ready..but in the end I am glad I did accept it. He is so much happier now and so excited to start school and ride the bus. I hope things work out for you and your son.
