 | I have two sons, 40 & 27 months. They have never been in any organized, structured program. They just started pre-k this week, M-W-F from 9-12.
On Monday, the oldest went looking for his brother twice, and somehow got into the other playground (climbed low fence?)- the teacher couldn't say how. At pick-up time, he was in circle time sitting near the teacher who was reading a pop-up book and he kept wanting to be the one to pull the tabs. Also, her assistant had to keep making him sit still.
Wednesday at pickup, I found him in the foyer with an assistant because he wouldn't listen/participate so they thought if he saw what he was missing out on, he would behave. He was starting to cry and was trying to open the security door that leads to his room. He won't listen or sit in circle time, he wants to go around and explore. He knows all his ABCs, colors, shapes, numbers almost to 100.
Upon entering the classroom in the morning, the kids are expected to pick up their name tag, yet I don't see anyone teaching him to recognize his. Wednesday he picked names out randomly while the other kids went directly for theirs. That night and today I taught him how to recognize his name already so he will be ready tomorrow. I feel like I have to snoop to see what they are doing so I can get him up to speed.
Do I just need to give him more time to adjust? Does the novelty of all the toys etc. need to wear off? He is in a group of 3 & 4 year olds, and I'm not sure how many have been to this school before and know the routine. It just seems like he is being excluded or labeled already. Shouldn't they re-direct his attention?
Another mother (who is a pediatrician) was livid and ranting Wednesday because she said her son's teacher's are rude, they have no patience, they should re-direct him, not label him etc. and he has only been there 2 months. I think she is removing him. Anyway, is this normal behavior? Should I try a Montessori school? I am the one who dreads to go to school now !! |
