Hmmm... good questions. I'll tell you what I know. The pill does stop ovulation, but just in case somehow an egg does develop, the pill also alters cervical fluid to make it hard for sperm to swim and also alters the lining of your uterus to make it hard for an egg to implant. The pill also tricks your body into thinking it's pregnant. It gives off hormones - kinda like the ones you do while pregnant, so your body doesn't produce an egg.

I also have the same question about missing one pill. I'm not sure on which week missing a pill would cause ovulation. I hear if you take it within 24 hours, you're pretty much ok. But then there are people who get preg. while taking the pill. Who knows...

I do know you are usually fertile 14 days before your period. The egg lives a couple of days, however sperm can live inside you 3-5 days just waiting for you to ovulate.

Hard to say about the soreness and stuff. Maybe your body is adjusting to getting off the pill - using your hormones instead of the one's the pill used to give you. You can also talk yourself into thinking your pregnant. I'd say you have to get a pregnancy test.
