Travelin' Tunes

by Robert Needlman, M.D., F.A.A.P. and Mona Behan
reviewed by Lynn Cates, M.D., F.A.A.P.
If every passenger in your family carts along his own portable CD player, you might never have to worry about finding a type of music that appeals to everyone in the car. But if you'd like a little more communal experience, it is possible to come up with tunes that span the generation gap, such as:
  • The Beatles 1. Songs like "Love Me Do," "Yellow Submarine," and "Yesterday" will have Mom and Dad flashing back to the '60s while infecting a whole new generation with Beatlemania.

  • Return to Pooh Corner. Folk-rocker Kenny Loggins' silken voice is perfect for this well-produced acoustic collection of children's songs. Soothing but never cloying or condescending, this musical outing features Loggins' appealing versions of "All the Pretty Little Ponies," "Rainbow Connection," and "To-Ra-Loo-Ra," as well as his own classic "Return to Pooh Corner."

  • Disney's Greatest, Volumes 1 and 2. Each collection includes 20 of the memorable songs that have made their way onto Disney soundtracks over the years. You'll find old-time hits such as "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" from Song of the South and "Once Upon a Dream" from Sleeping Beauty as well as more modern offerings such as "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan and "Hukuna Matata" from The Lion King. Kid stuff, yes, but the type that parents usually find easy to take.

  • Road songs. If you've got young children aboard, you might enjoy some of the collections of children's music especially geared for road trips. Try "Car Tunes" by Sugar Beats, which features songs about cars (e.g., "Car Wash," "Fun, Fun, Fun") and Sesame Street's "Sing Along Travel Songs " (e.g., "The Bear Went Over the Mountain," "Are We There Yet?").
