Immunizations: Introduction

by Lynn Cates, M.D., F.A.A.P.
reviewed by Laura Jana, M.D., F.A.A.P.
If you are like most parents, you want to do everything in your power to ensure that your child grows up as healthy as possible. To that end, you go to great lengths to protect him from harm by doing things like putting him to sleep on his back to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and carefully selecting and cutting up his food to prevent him from choking. And you wouldn't dream of taking him somewhere in the car without buckling him into his car seat.

It is easy for most parents to see how these interventions help keep their children from injury or even death. What often is harder to comprehend, however, is the tremendous protection that routine childhood immunizations can offer children against permanently debilitating, sometimes fatal, diseases.

Important protection that's easy to take for granted
The value of vaccines isn't always appreciated nowadays because our modern-day immunization programs have been very successful in significantly limiting the impact of the vaccine-preventable diseases. In fact, many parents (and many pediatricians) never have encountered some of these conditions.

While this means that fewer people have to suffer the potentially deadly effects of these diseases, it also makes it easier to take the benefits of the vaccines for granted. But the bottom line is that parents should realize that if their child is not immunized, he could contract one or more of the vaccine-preventable diseases and suffer potentially devastating complications.

Finding accurate vaccine information
There is a lot of information available to parents on vaccines. Some of it is accurate and based on solid scientific information; some is merely conjecture or based on myths. We at The Dr. Spock Company intend to make every effort to ensure that you are provided only the best and most accurate information available.
