Immunization Schedules

by Lynn Cates, M.D., F.A.A.P.
reviewed by Laura Jana, M.D., F.A.A.P.
As you are probably aware, your child's healthcare provider follows carefully developed recommendations when it comes to giving vaccines. Every year the immunization schedule is developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and then it is submitted to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the United States Public Health Service (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for approval. The schedule is complex because we are fortunate to have excellent vaccines to prevent many diseases, and because the recommendations permit some flexibility as to when doses of certain vaccines can be given.

In addition to the recommendations for immunizing children, there are comprehensive recommendations for adolescents and adults, pregnant women, and travelers. There also are carefully formulated recommendations for catching up on immunizations when doses have been missed, and guidelines regarding when immunizations are not recommended. These schedules can be obtained on the website of the National Immunization Program (NIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as follows (Note: Links that lead to PDF documents require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.):
