Internet Book Lists for Children

by Robert Needlman, M.D., F.A.A.P.
reviewed by Laura Jana, M.D., F.A.A.P.
There is a world of information about children's books on the Internet. To help you find what you want quickly, I've selected eight sites that I think you might find valuable. As of the date of my review, all were free, technically sound, and open about their authors and sponsorship. Several are from public libraries.

Once you find a book you might like, check with your local library or bookstore. If they don't have it, they may be able to order it for you.

My annotations are just to give you a sense of what you'll find at each link; there is much more that I don't have room to describe. (As with other links, drSpock.com can't take responsibility for all of the content on the other sites; if you do find content that you feel is incorrect or objectionable, please do let us know!)

"The Children's Literature Web Guide." Book lists, a listing of still other book lists, reader's theater (simple scripts that are fun to read aloud with children), and more.

"American Library Association." Lists of award-winning children's books, as well as an index of 700+ cool sites for kids.

"Award Winning Books." A listing of books that have won any of 15 awards, arranged by age.

"Miami University of Ohio Guide to Picture Books." A powerful-but-easy search tool that helps you to locate children's books by topic, skill, concept, or area of study.

"Lake Oswego Public Library". A well-organized, very readable list of classics, read-alouds, and other favorites.

"Logan Library Index to Children's Booklists". Organized by topic and age, with a very good bibliotherapy section on books about special issues such as divorce, physical disabilities, and peace. Bibliotherapy is a technique of using carefully chosen books to help children or adults deal with their problems, whether those are chronic illness, developmental problems, or psychological problems.

"New York Public Library Recommended Kids Books." Good top 100 lists by topic (but not broken down by age).

"The Barahona Center, California State University, Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents." A wonderful resource for finding Spanish-language children's books, with excellent search capability.
