Valentine's Day: Didja Know?

by Pam Vetack
reviewed by Laura Jana, M.D., F.A.A.P.
• Seventy percent of people celebrating the holiday give a card, followed by a telephone call (49 percent), gift (48 percent), special dinner (37 percent), candy (33 percent), restaurant meal (30 percent), and flowers (19 percent).

• Teachers receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and, finally, sweethearts. Children ages 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million valentines with teachers, classmates, and family members.

• The humorous valentines of the 19th century were called "Vinegar Valentines" or "Penny Dreadfuls."

• The oldest known valentine still in existence was sent by the Duke of Orleans while imprisoned in the Tower of London to his French wife in A.D. 1415. It is on display in a British museum.

• Revolutionary War days saw the first valentines in the United States. They were handmade, mostly pen-and-ink drawings.

• Eighty percent of all Valentine cards are purchased for relatives.
