It's a good idea to learn about the vaccines your child will receive before you take him to be immunized. Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) are handouts created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to give you facts about each vaccine that is recommended for routine use in the United States. VIS provide helpful information such as: Why you should have your child immunized against the specific disease Who should get the vaccine When the vaccine should be given Possible side effects of the vaccine When the vaccine should be postponed or not given at all Other sources of information on the vaccine VIS are required If your child has gotten any of his vaccinations, you already should be familiar with VIS. In the United States, federal law requires healthcare providers to give the relevant VIS to the parent or legal representative of any child (or to the adult if the adult is to receive the vaccine) each time they give a dose of any of the following vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), polio, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), or varicella (chickenpox). VIS also are available for hepatitis A, influenza, Lyme disease, meningococcal, pneumococcal, and anthrax vaccines. Specific VIS Although healthcare providers are required to provide you with the appropriate VIS at the time of a shot, it can easily buried in a stack of papers from your visit and misplaced. Because they contain useful information that you may want to review, we have made them available to you on our site.
