Irritating bowel movements during an attack of diarrhea sometimes cause a very sore rash around the anus or a smooth, bright red rash on the buttocks. The treatment is to try to change the diaper just as soon as it is soiled, which is no small task. This is obviously easier said than done! Clean the irritated or raw areas with warm water, gently pat the area dry, and apply a thick covering of diaper cream or an ointment made with petroleum jelly and lanolin. If this doesn't work, the diaper should be left off and the diaper area exposed to the air. Sometimes it seems that while the baby has diarrhea, nothing helps very much. Fortunately, this type of diaper rash cures itself as soon as the diarrhea is over. If your baby's rash persists or continues to worsen despite your efforts, beyond when the diarrhea resolves, or if your baby seems to be in considerable pain, have the rash evaluated by your child's health care provider.
