Consumer Alert from FDA
Consumer Alert: Yolk-Free Noodle Style Pasta Recalled
Ingredient Statement Fails to Declare Eggs

KANSAS CITY, MO - February 8, 2002 - American Italian Pasta Company today announced that it is voluntarily recalling approximately 2,650 cases of 12 oz. packages of Mueller's Yolk Free Wide Noodle Style Pasta (UPC code 02965123 with lot codes beginning 121903Y and 122003Y) because the ingredient statement fails to declare eggs. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of allergic reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported. The action is limited to the Mueller's Yolk Free Wide Noodle style pasta in stand-up, block bottom packages.

The recall extension is related to prior efforts to correct the ingredient statement on the package label during the original recall. This recall extension is limited to only those stand-up block bottom packages that do not have a correction label applied over the original ingredient statement. If the ingredient statement on the package notes the presence of eggs and egg whites, that product is not subject to this recall extension.

Mueller's Yolk Free Wide Noodle style pasta is distributed in grocery and other retail outlets in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Other UPC codes of Mueller's products are not affected.

Consumers with these packages are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

"We apologize to our retail partners, distributors and consumers for this inconvenience," said Timothy S. Webster, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We want to reassure everyone that this is a packaging issue, and not a product issue."

--Media with questions about the recall may contact Wendy Coffey, director of corporate communications, AIPC, at (816) 584-5609.
--Consumers with questions about the recall should call AIPC at 1-877-328-7278.
